Thao Bui
Thao sees being a college student as an opportunity to be a role model for her younger sibling. By being both the oldest child and the first person in her family to attend a four-year university, a lot of weight was put on her shoulders to succeed but she has taken it in stride.
“I am a role model for my younger brother to follow, as well as I am strong and brave to be the first woman and the first generation in my family to attend a four-year university. It has been extremely tough for me to be a first-generation college student because I feel like I am alone in another area with less support and motivation.” She wished to go to college so she could support both herself and her loved ones. After switching her major twice, she was able to find the right fit: History. Though she hasn’t decided exactly what she wants to do with her degree yet, she is confident that it will lead to a good career. “When I was a high student, I enjoyed taking history courses because it was a subject that encouraged me to study more about historical events and well-known people around the world. All my history teachers taught me to love history by telling me to take my time to read and understand about the earlier times. At first, I believed that history is an uninteresting subject, however this changed after I read several books and watch historical tv series and movies.” |
Before coming to college, Thao spent a lot of her time volunteering. She volunteered for the American Red Cross within their Department of Food Pantry in Boston in order to give back to her community. She currently works as a student assistant in the Student Affairs Office.
Thao is not only a member of the River Hawk Scholars Academy, but a member of Let’s Get Ready as well. By being a member of Let’s Get Ready, she receives support from other student mentors. Through these support systems, she is in good shape to achieve her goals.
“I am willing to do everything that I can in order to achieve all my purposes in life.”
