Many first-generation students face burdens and hardships that the average non-first generation student does not. Some of these hardships include financial issues, lack of family support, the need to work multiple jobs during school to stay afloat, immigration concerns, etc.
Though first-generation college students face many adversities and obstacles during the college application process as well as college itself, these students have incredible strengths that sets them apart from non-first-generation college students. FGCS have high levels of enthusiasm. They are excited and proud to be the first in their family to go to college. They also have a strong commitment in being successful during their college career as well as dedicated, open, and excited to learn. Some view the term “first-gen” as a strength rather than a deficit. This page allows these students to have a voice and to shine a light on what they go through as well as how they overcame their hardships. In doing so, other students, professors, and administrators can work together to help these students and boost their chances on being successful. A first generation college student is someone who prevails, constantly beatings the odds that are against us, while working towards the future that those before us couldn't have.” |
