The ProjectTwo of Marilyn's passions are helping others as well as utilizing photography and technology to advance others. The idea for her honors project was to combine the two and create a website that showcases RHSA students and gives them a platform to discuss hardships as well as successes that they have faced throughout their lives.
Many first-generation college students (FGCS) face burdens and hardships that the average non-first generation do not. Some of these hardships include financial issues, lack of support from family, need to work multiple jobs during school to stay afloat, immigration concerns, etc. FGCS have a 33% chance of dropping out while their counterparts drop out rate is less than half of that .HORHSA allows them to have a voice to shine a light on things that might deter them from being successful in their studies and by doing so, other students, professors, and administrators can work together to help these students and boost their chances on being successful. The examples of hardships Marilyn had mentioned above all applied to her. She is not first-generation college; however, she is a first-generation American. She has felt the obstacles that many other FGCS have faced due to these hardships and wished to showcase these stories to enlighten others. Feeling like others do not understand your obstacles can be very frustrating; however, HORSHA gives RHSA students an opportunity to discuss their obstacles and perhaps connect with other RHSA students who are facing similar issues. It helps create a sense of community for these students, which is one of the main goals of RHSA. About Marilyn
