Kemissa Osit
Opportunities and experiences have helped Kemissa realize her true passions. Kemissa is majoring in Public Health and works as a pharmacy technician part time. This experience has helped her realize in what form she would like to help people.
“From that job, I was able to realize that I like more of a direct contact with patients in terms of helping them with their health. So, it's an experience that helped me figure out what I do and do not like doing. I wanted to be a pharmacist but after working there, I learned that it wasn’t for me. It definitely helped me figure out myself and helped me build certain skills that could lead to a better future.” Being a first-generation student has not been easy for Kemissa, but she does not see it as a disadvantage. “Being a college student means taking on a new challenge that you haven't taken before. This means independence and creating your own paths of success that your family hasn't really done before. I feel like the opportunities I have are almost equal to non-first-generation students. It’s just up to me to take advantage of the resources I have available.” |
The different experiences she has faced has helped her become more mature, independent, and grounded. Additionally, she has the support of her family, who wished for her to have the opportunity to receive the higher education that they didn’t have. Though they cannot give her the advice that she needs sometimes, they support her in other ways.
“My mom has meals prepared for me every time I go home. They also call me regularly to find out how I am doing. Just knowing I have that support is very comforting.”
Kemissa’s mom is a certified nursing assistant. This helped Kemissa realize her passion for helping people, specifically those who are from underrepresented communities.
“I'm open to anything that involves helping others, mainly those that are underrepresented. I feel like they need my help the most.”
Kemissa was able to transition from high school to college fairly easily and now feels at home on campus and with the Lowell community.
“I feel like I was put here to help better understand myself and grow as a person so that in whatever career choice I end up making, I’ll be that person to help others because I’ve been able to help myself.”
