Jake Wright
Jake went to a vocational-technical high school where he received some certifications in the medical field. He wished to further his education and came to UMass Lowell with the goal of being a dermatologist. Jake has dealt with skin problems in the past which has motivated him to help others.
During school, Jake works at the Wellness Center. “I work as a front desk assistant, so I do a lot of paperwork, set up appointments, and general day to day office tasks. One of the reason’s why I applied for this job was so I could be in the medical field. Even though I do not directly work with patients, my job still involves me helping people and it is very nice and rewarding.” Jake is active on campus and is part of the Pre-Med club as well as the Biology club. Additionally, he has submitted his application to be a part of Healthy Hawks. Healthy Hawks is a peer health education organization on campus that provides students accessible health resources. Jake is also interested in starting up a LGBTQ club on campus with his friends. Though there already is a club like this, he felt like his new club could offer some other forms of support. The idea for this new group involves some leaders in the LGBTQ community as well as members that will meet about once a month. This group will be a support system to those who are coming out, thinking about coming out, or would like advice in general. |
There will be options to remain anonymous and students can receive support through email if they cannot attend meetings.
“The meetings won’t be flashy and big. They will be in a secluded room or a place where there is not a high flow of traffic. You can come and just hang out without fear of being stigmatized.”
Jake feels as though there are people who judge a book by its cover and that they do not take the time to learn about other people. Taking time to get to know one another is a very crucial aspect in achieving equality and understanding among others. He is motivated to break barriers and give a voice to those who might not be able to use theirs yet.
“I feel like some walls need to be broken. I have this freedom nothing's holding me back.”
