Alexander Fitzpatrick
Alexander is really grateful for the support he has received from his family, the River Hawk Scholars Academy, and his fraternity Sigma Tau Gamma. Originally, Alex wished to join the military however after being medically disqualified, Alex decided to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. Currently, his goal is to be a college professor and teach forensic chemistry.
Alex also really enjoys living on campus and getting to know the community. “I am a really social person. Living on campus has helped me be able to get to classes easily and engage with other students. My sister also goes here but she commutes. I could never do that.” Not only does Alex have the support of his parents, but also the support of his aunt who believes in him so much that she co-signed his loan. His aunt is the only person in his extended family to attain a college degree. “She is doing it because she wants us to be able to do what we want and experience college. She is the first one in the extended family who has gone to college, so she took it upon herself to help us do what we want to do in order to achieve our goals.” |
Like many students, Alex has faced obstacles in his life. One of his biggest obstacles was assimilating into the college life while being transgender.
“It’s been difficult being on a floor with all dudes and none of them knowing I’m trans, because I am female to male transgender. It is something that's very hard to adjust to, because I don't publicly announce it right away. I don't want people to categorize me as that. I just want to be a normal person.”
Alex’s fraternity has been very supportive of the fact that he is transgender.
“They would never disqualify someone for being a part of LGBTQ and they take discrimination very seriously. I am a brother and that helps on many different levels. It’s a great place to talk about struggles and my brothers help me and support me a lot. It is not like your stereotypical Greek Life.”
Family is everything to Alex.
“My family has played a huge role in my college career in every aspect possible. I talk to my mom almost every single day and it’s usually about something that can help me. They push me and motivate me. They are my biggest cheerleaders.”
Something Alex wishes the university would do is to make it required for all Resident Advisors to be Ally Space Trained to ensure all people who are LGBTQ have the support they need.
Alex is very excited about his college career and his future.
“I’m so thankful for this opportunity-everything that can come from it.”
